INSTITUTE OF GEOCHEMISTRY, MINERALOGY AND ORE FORMATION (IGMOF)
Institute of geochemistry, mineralogy and ore formation (IGMOF) belongs to National Academy of Science of Ukraine (NASU). It was established in 1969 as Institute of geochemistry and physics of minerals and took during 1970th-1980th leading positions in the Soviet Union in research of inorganic natural solid substances of Earth.
The structure of the Institute can be found here: structure
More than 220 co-workers, including scientists, technical personal and subsidiary staff work in IGMOF today. The main research areas of 11 scientific departments include:
- Isotopes' geochemistry and geochronology;
- Physics of minerals;
- Biomineralogy;
- Genetic mineralogy;
- Endogenous petrology;
- Geochemistry, geology and metallogeny of ores in Ukraine;
- Environmental and exploring geochemistry.
Regional geochemical, mineralogical and petrologic investigations are focused on Precambrian rocks of Ukrainian Shield.
In most of these directions IGMOF is the only or leading scientific center in Ukraine.
Current scientific projects and main interests:
- Chrono-stratigraphic analysis and partition of early Precambrian magmatic and gneiss-migmatites rocks of Ukrainian Shield. Geodynamic conditions of formation of Ukrainian and Baltic shields in Archaean and Paleoproterozoic time.
- Elaboration of complex geochemical criteria for rare metals. Evaluation of Proterozoic complexes of Ukrainian Shield for the rare metals ores by the complex of mineralogical methods.
- Development of mineralogical prospecting criteria for the diamond bearing kimberlites and lamproites.
- Autonomous nanoobjects in rock-forming minerals: Investigation of mechanisms of their formation and evolution from isolated defects to nanophases and mineral assemblages.
- Experimental study of isomorphic substitutions of transition metal elements in minerals by complex of spectroscopic and structural methods.
- Geochemical and petrologic peculiarities of alkaline rocks of Ukrainian Shield depending on geodynamic conditions of their formation.
- Elaboration of the petrogenetic formation model for the different types of apatite-ilmenite and apatite ores. Study of regularity in ore deposits allocation and their prognosis in the Ukrainian Shield.
- Study of regularity in gold deposits allocation in green belts and zones of Proterozoic activation in the Ukrainian Shield.
- Study of chemical forms, distribution and migration of heavy metals in different soils and landscapes of Ukraine.
- Zoning of the Ukraine regions accordingly to their pollution by toxic elements. Prognosis of eco-geochemical conditions in different regions.
